(Sacramento, CA) — On Tuesday, January 27th, Assemblymember Jessica Caloza (D-Los Angeles), introduced Assembly Bill 1650, the Slam the Brakes on ICE Act, in response to the reckless attacks and senseless killings by ICE across the state and country. Existing law regulates the business of renting passenger vehicles to the public. This bill would prohibit a rental company from renting a vehicle to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“ICE is terrorizing our communities—in our schools, businesses, places of worship, neighborhoods, and our own homes. AB 1650 holds the Trump Administration accountable and lets them know that if they come for one of us, they come for all of us,” said Assemblymember Jessica Caloza and member of the California Asian & Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. “While ICE is tearing families apart and kidnapping children, Trump is building a multi-million dollar ballroom and is cutting billions of dollars in healthcare. As leaders and legislators, we should be working to fix our broken immigration system with humanity, not advancing policies that deny dignity, opportunity, and justice for all.”
As immigrant communities become overwhelmingly targeted by ICE, Assemblymember Liz Ortega (D-San Leandro), Co-Vice Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, is a Principal Co-Author of this bill.

This bill comes in the wake of the abusive practices and the senseless killings of innocent civilians at the hands of ICE in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and across the country.
