(Los Angeles, CA) — Assemblymember Jessica Caloza (D–Los Angeles) hosted a State Boards and Commissions Appointments Workshop on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, bringing community members together at Manila Inasal to learn how they can serve California through gubernatorial appointments.
The workshop, held in partnership with the Office of Governor Gavin Newsom, featured California Appointments Secretary Morgan Carvajal, who provided an overview of the state’s boards and commissions, available opportunities, and the appointments process. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and learn how their professional expertise and lived experiences can contribute to state government.
“As a proud immigrant and someone who has dedicated their life to public service, I know how powerful it is to see someone who looks like you and comes from a background like yours at the table where decisions are being made,” said Assemblymember Jessica Caloza. “When people see themselves represented, they can see themselves in our government and public institutions. I want every Californian to know that their lived experience is valuable, their voice matters, and there is a place for them at the table.”
The event focused on making the appointments process more accessible to community members who may not have a traditional background in government or politics. Assemblymember Caloza emphasized that public service extends beyond elected office and that Californians from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds can contribute through board and commission service.
“California is at its best when the people making decisions reflect the people they serve,” Caloza added. “Representation matters at every level of government, and I encourage everyone who joined us to take that next step and consider how they can serve their community and our state.”
Assemblymember Caloza also thanked Secretary Carvajal and the Governor’s Office for participating in the workshop, as well as Chef Natalia and the Manila Inasal team for hosting the event and welcoming the community.
The workshop is part of Assemblymember Caloza’s ongoing efforts to make state government more accessible and ensure residents of the 52nd Assembly District have the information and resources they need to participate in public service and bring their voices to the table.
